The earthquake has devastated Thangpalkot (click here for photos) and its neighbors.

For a number of years now, COMMITTED had been assisting schools in Thangpalkot with resources, infrastructure and more recently with a Social Business for Education (SBE) project–a fishery–to help them become self-sustainable. (Follow links in this post about our 2013-14 annual report for more.) And now, we have to start pretty much from scratch!

We have however been very fortunate to have had financial support from people and organizations around the world to provide immediate relief to the beautiful children and people of Thangpalkot.

To date, COMMITTED has provided 1,600 blankets, 800 packets of packed food, over 200 tarps to the people of the VDC and medical supplies worth Rs. 50,000. (Click here for photos of the distribution.)

Temporary “classrooms” have been constructed to engage the children of Thangpalkot in meaningful educational and other leisure activities. COMMITTED provided 200 tarps for their construction. (Click here for photos.)

The plan is to have arts and craft, library reading, sports, community service (such as helping with clearance of debris) and other leisure activities (such as boat riding) etc. Volunteers and COMMITTED staff have already been in the village since last Friday to begin working with teachers to assess classroom needs and to plan out the details of the program.

Seeing a demand for mobile phone recharge stations when the first one was set up at the police station a number of days ago, the husband-wife team of our friends–Manaslu and Chris visiting the VDC over this weekend–are setting up one solar-cell charging station per ward in all nine wards of Thangpalkot VDC. Once power is restored to the village, the cells and the accessories shall be turned over to the schools for their use.

COMMITTED has also dispatched sufficient solar cells and accessories to Phulpingkot VDC. In the next few days, we shall also be providing the same to communities in Bhotang and Baruwa–two neighboring VDCs in Sindhupalchok still without power.

All of this is just the beginning. We recognize that we have a long way to go but continue along this path we will.

We’re COMMITED (to) bringing back the smiles on the faces of the children of Thangpalkot and its neighbors!
